Following the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, Vauban created Mont Louis in 1679 to tighten the Spanish border. The fortress (and in particular the convict's pit with its immense wheel), is a very beautiful example of 17th century military architecture, which has retained its main vocation, the citadel is still occupied by the army. The site in awaiting world heritage classification by Unesco.
