Sales Fortress: Vestige of a tumultuous past...

This magnificent fortress, built by Spain from 1497, is buffered by walls nearly 10 metres thick. Occupying a strategic position, it was finally conquered by the French in 1642. The Treaty of the Pyrenees, in 1659, confirmed its definite ownership to France.
